As you can see, Rutois hot is a rather elegant and refined fish-person. I assume her to be about 5'7' - 5'9" (because, as I recall, she was almost if not just as tall as Link in her adult form). She doesn't wear clothes, but then none of her people do unless it's really cold or it's for decoration. She has an extra set of eyes on the back-sides of her head, which I assume she can see out of, giving her a rather panaramic field of vision. As you can see, she has webbed feet and has fins, but otherwise is human-like (including hands with four fingers each and thumbs) She also has boobs - though lacks nipples or (if you want me to get icky) a vagina. I assume that the later is covered up by a thin layer of over-skin and the former are similarly covered by a film of over-skin (I assume this is the same reason Zora always look so glossy) used foe heating and protection from elements. She wears a pear of neat earrings all the time and has a fairly robust (for a woman, let alone princess) build.
Personality: Brash and bombastic, Ruto knows she is noble-born and struts it. She's arrogant, forceful, and very much used to getting her way. At the same time, however, she is sympathetic and caring, perhaps even a little rebellious against certain parts of her station. She hates being doted, despite liking getting her way -- she doesn't want to have to depend on anyone, least of all her father (who she likes, but considers more than a little annoying). Still, she has a strong sense of pride in both herself and her people, and a near maternal love for the Zora people -- she is willing to go to great lengths to protect them. She used to be something of a bossy tomboy in her youth, and while that still comes out at times, she is now something of a commanding and proper noble, if still a bit brash at times.
History: Hokay, I assume Ruto was like thirteen or fourteen around the time that Link first meets her, just 'cus I assume she's slightly older than Link. Prior to that, she was brought up by and doted by her father, the king of the Zora tribe in Hyrule. Her mother (unnamed) gave her the spiritual stone of water (the Zora's Sapphire) sometime in this period too, and as she's never seen and Ruto treasures that item so much... I assume she died, probably from illness or something, as Ruto isn't too traumatized by it -- I also assume this happened at a fairly young age. Anyway, her mother told her to give that thing to the person she was going to marry.
She grew up a tomboy, regularly feeding the Zora's "god" (Lord Jabu-Jabu), and also regularly allowed herself to be eaten by this same god, exploring his stomach.Nice fish. Anyway, Ruto does this often so she's cool and badass and all that, but one time she goes in there and Jabu-Jabu is not only pissed and sick, but there's electric jellyfish in his belly. What the fuck, right? To make matters worse, she also looses her mother's trinket, and refuses to leave until she can find it -- she also got stuck 'cus Jabu-Jabu was so sick and pissed. So she writes a letter in a bottle and manages to toss it out of Jabu-Jabu somehow. As it would be, Link finds this bottle clean on the other side of Hyrule (thank you, rivers) and shows her dad -- he moves his fat-ass to let Link go see Jabu-Jabu.
So Link and Ruto have a fun time exploring the innards of the fish-god (and Ruto forces Link to carry her, because he's a peasant and she's amazing) and work to find her trinket. Once the defeat the bug/monster that Ganondorf planed in Jabu-Jabu, Link finds the Zora's Sapphire and gives it back to Ruto so they can leave. Ruto shakes her head and gives it to Link, commenting on how "cool" he is and that she accepts him as her husband-to-betoo bad that brat lied to her. =C Link then hops on back to Zelda so that they can open up the door to the Triforce so Ganondorf can rape the world.
So then Ganondorf rapes the world and all of Hyrule is thrown into a big-ass war. Now, the Zora are isolationists and don't believe in war, but they also hold control of the Water Temple and the means of making the Water Sage -- something Ganondorf fears. So he creates Morpha to taint the Water Temple and similarly links that to a curse on the Zora domain --it freezes over it and everyone in it. Except for Ruto, because at the last minute she's saved by the double-agent freak named Sheik. Ruto then immediately runs off to the Water Temple to save her people by attempting to best Morpha. Apparently this takes her a while or Ganondorf took a while to mess with the Zora, as Link runs into her there. Together, they defeat Morpha and re-activate the Water Temple.
This causes Ruto to awaken as the Sage of Water. She chides Link forbeing a homewrecker not recalling the vows they made when they were kids, but then laments that while she would like nothing more than to love him and live with him eternally, her duties as the Sage of Water and his duties as the Hero of Time (at least for now) need to pull them apart.
Interesting information: Ruto is the Sage of Water, which I'm sure affords her some magical abilities which are only hinted at in the canon. I'm going to assume some power of water. It's also never confirmed if she can use any weapons, but I doubt it seeing as how the Zora don't believe in war. I assume she's a good singer and dancer though, as her counter-part (Lulu) in Magora's Mask is.
